Clapton is split between two boroughs with Hackney to the South and Haringey to the North. On the eastern border is the River Lee (or Lea) and Stamford Hill to the West.

A great place for dog walking in the area is Springfield Park, running down the hill eastwards to the Lea. It was created in 1905 out of three great mansion gardens, of which only Springfield House survives. Known as the White House, it has a café and the municipal rangers' station. For those who love walking their dog by the water, you can do this whilst watching the boats in Springfield Marina, a packed mooring for narrow boats and other waterway craft such as rowers from the Lea Rowing Club.

Camden dog day careIn addition to Springfield Park, the long leafy strip of Clapton Common is well worth a visit with your dog. It has the recently regenerated Clapton Pond (there are also the two Clapton Ponds which are two much smaller ex-reservoirs in Lower Clapton). It is a great place to watch birds so be careful with your dog. Besides the usual variety of ducks, geese and swans, shy birds as grebes and other waders may often be seen feeding in the reed beds.

Worth a view in Upper Clapton is one of London's more unusual churches, the Church of the Good Shepherd which was used as a place of worship by the Ancient Catholic Church and now is used by the Georgian Orthodox Church. However, the church was originally built by the Agapemonite cult in 1892 as the Church of the Ark of the Covenant. Although it is fairly conventional in floor plan, the outside of the church is a riot of statuary and symbolism. It is built in a Gothic style and is Grade II listed - for its "curiosity value".

Close by the Good Shepherd is the stately New Synagogue on the eastern side of Clapton Common. Also Grade II listed, it is deceptive and appears much older than it actually is. It was actually only built in 1915, but it is a copy of John Davies 1838 Great St Helen's Synagogue in the City of London

Hackney dates back to a 5th century Saxon settlement. It was not mentioned in the Doomsday Book as it was then part of Stepney. A medieval church dates back to the 13th Century. It was still a one street village in Georgian times and it was not until the 19th century that it started expanding although Homerton, Clapton and Hackney were still separated by fields. It was only with the demolition of old homes and the coming of the railways in 1870 and the trams in 1870 that it moved from a rural area to a suburban one.
