Whilst Dulwich is predominantly residential in nature, it has been slowly transformed in the recent past to one appealing to the more affluent. The Dulwich has now developed into a trendy family centred village type suburb. A key part of the area is the Lordship Lane shopping area where many new and good restaurants and cafes have sprung up. In this shopping area, there are also many independent shops selling a wide range of exclusive goods and a specialist organic greengrocer.

For those who love visiting markets, which is always easier when with your dog than many shopping centres and shops, there are great family markets on Fridays and Saturdays on North Cross Road. There is a wide selection of goods sold there such as second hand books and CDs. For food you can purchase some from the many specialist food stores and have a drink at one of the local pubs. Alternatively, visit the many Gastro pubs that provide some great meals at reasonable prices.

England's first public picture gallery was founded in 1811 in Dulwich, unsurprisingly called the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Its paintings are predominantly the art of the 17th and 18th century, including other great artists such as Picasso, Rembrandt, Tiepolo and Van Gogh. As well as the standard paintings, Dulwich Picture gallery has a many new exhibitions and activities for all the family, including art courses and school and local community projects. The Dulwich Picture gallery can also be hired for parties.

The jewel in the crown of Dulwich for dog walkers is Dulwich Park which is just to the west of Lordship Lane. There are many great walks here, including areas where you can let the dog off to roam. It has a royal history, with Queen Mary being a regular visitor to the park, gardens and floral displays, so much so that they named one of the gates after her – Queen Mary’s Gate.

If you have had a great dog walk, you may want to relax in Dulwich Park's café which is in the centre of the park. Though difficult if you have the dog with you, you might want to go boating on the lake and there are many sporting facilities. The sporting facilities in Dulwich Park include tennis, football and cricket. In addition to the recently announced London bikes for hire, you can hire various sorts of recumbent bikes. If the weather is great, why not take your dog and have a picnic with the many other Dulwich locals.

When walking the dog in Dulwich Park, you will not be alone. Apart from Chris, our local Dulwich dog walker, there are many other owners who will stop and talk to you. In the Dulwich area, there are alternative places to take your pooch for a walk, including Goose Green which is located on the corner of Dulwich Road and Lordship Lane, which is smaller, but a great local choice that also has many other activities in the summer for both dog and family.
