Hampstead Heath is a great place for dog walking offering one of London’s best loved open spaces covering 790 acres of park and ancient woodland. Its unique attraction is that it offers complete escape from the city, a perfect rural hideaway teaming with wildlife and stunning walks, where dogs can really roam free. Rambling and hilly, it sits astride a sandy ridge, which is one of the highest points in London, which runs from Hampstead to Highgate, embracing large ponds, three open air public swimming pools and Kenwood House, one of London’s finest regency homes, where you can stop off for refreshments and enjoy a priceless collection of paintings.

Hampstead Dog WalkingThe heath also provides many of the best views of London’s skyline, Parliament Hill being a particular favourite which took its name from being a point of defence during the English Civil War - a place for the troops loyal to Parliament.

Hampstead is well-known for it’s artistic, liberal and literary associations and the roll call of world-renowned residents past and present is too long to list, but painter John Constable is buried in Hampstead and poet John Keats, whose poem Ode to a nightingale was inspired by a bird he heard while at the Spaniards Inn on the northen border of the heath – still a great pub to this day. Another interesting fact, CS Lewis was also inspired to write the famous novel, “The Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe” while walking on the heath on a snowy day.

Walking around the Hampstead you’ll feel like you’re in a small country village rather than a city suburb with charming narrow lanes, delightful cottages, historic houses and a long tradition of art. Records of Hampstead’s history date back to 986 A.D. when King Ethelred the Unready gave the parts of Hampstead and Hendon to the Westminster's monastery of St. Peter’s for farming purposes. It continued to be used for rural purposes until Henry VIII embarked on his dissolution of the monasteries in 1538. When this happened, the land of Hampstead was sold off by the Crown to private buyers. During the 17th century, villages began to grow around London and Hampstead was one of them.

As London began to expand in the 19th century, the new rich built manor houses out in Hampstead as a healthier and more attractive place to stay than the centre of London. However, it wasn’t until Victorian times that both Hampstead and London became so built up that they merged which meant rapid growth for Hampstead and the population doubled in the twenty years leading up to 1871.

The twentieth century saw the railways arriving in Hampstead with Lloyd George opening the station in 1907. Today its key sights are a wealth of historical attractions which, combined with a vibrant restaurant and café scene, make it a must see place to visit.
