Muswell Hill, approximately 6 miles north of London's West End, is a predominantly Edwardian suburb of north London, which resides for the most part in the borough of Haringey.
Situated on top of a hill, the suburb takes its name from old stories in the region. Legend tells of a Scottish king who was cured of a disease after drinking water from a "Mossy Well", a natural spring in the area. During medieval times many people were believed to have made pilgrimages to the area hoping to fall upon the same kind of luck. Over time the area became known as Muswell and eventually Muswell Hill. Similarly, the River Moselle, which has its source in Muswell Hill and Highgate, is believed to have been named after the same Mossy Well and was originally referred to as the Mosa or Mosella.
Largely untouched by modern developers, Muswell Hill has retained much of its original character and charm. Many of the shops' original facades are still preserved above street level and an art deco Odeon cinema (a Grade II Listed Building) still does thriving business. Muswell Hill Broadway and Fortis Green Road are the two main shopping streets and have kept a strong identity with many independent boutique shops and cafes, whilst welcoming some of the more familiar high street names. There is a synagogue, three churches, numerous bars, a library and two gyms.
From the top of the hill there are stunning views over the whole of West London. On foot, Crouch End is about a 15 minute walk down the hill in one direction and in the other direction Highgate Village is about a twenty minute walk away. Both Crouch End and Highgate are similar North London "villages."
Being at the top of a hill, Muswell Hill isn't directly accessible by train, but it is close to tube stations at Highgate, Finsbury Park and Turnpike Lane; and to train stations at Alexandra Palace and Hornsey. It is also served incredibly well by buses, with many travelling into the centre of London.
Muswell Hill has eight primary schools and two secondary schools; and with Alexandra Palace and Highgate Woods on its doorstep it is an excellent place to raise children and pets. Alexandra Park is a Green Flag Award winning park, set over 80 hectares and is the home of Alexandra Palace, which contains an ice skating rink and hosts many live music concerts throughout the year. Highgate Wood, situated between East Finchley, Highgate Village and Muswell Hill, is a woodland set over 28 hectares. Both the park and the wood are extremely popular walking destination with dog owners.
